Nadine Reynolds “Really Time anyway” 76.2cm x 76.2cm Mixed media on silk, on canvas $800 “Bohemian Rhapsody” the most downloaded single on Spotify, a billion views on utube, named best British single only two years after its release, - a song so famous even the original lyrics fetched a million dollars at auction. Everybody has their own memories, their own connection to the song. Mine, was as a nine-year-old watching “Top of the Pops” in the UK. I was mesmerised and terrified in equal measure. Bohemian Rhapsody was one of the songs that made up the soundtrack of this time in my life.
Nadine Reynolds “INCREDIBLE taste constantly 30.5cm x 30.5cm Mixed media on silk, on canvas SOLD Our friends and neighbours, Kurt and Judy, showed us Kurt’s mum’s recipe book. His parents had lived in Hollywood in the 1950’s. The recipe book full of memories is also aesthetically delightful. Typewriters have their own fingerprint. I made the easy hollandaise recipe and captured some of the colour in the background. I decided to embroider only some of the words. The three I chose held their own message. The genesis of a new series, and a new way of making.
Nadine Reynolds “only seek answers” 30.5cm x 30.5cm Mixed media on silk, on canvas NFS My friend Tristan James is an Elvis Presley Tribute artist. He has taught me much about collaboration and how we can be influenced for good by those we honour. I looked to find Elvis’ handwriting to celebrate Tristan’s 40th birthday. The message seems to be written just for him. It echoes across decades.
Nadine Reynolds “be A Stone” 52cm x 52cm Mixed media on silk, on canvas SOLD Finding these handwritten lyrics online was joyous. The scribbles and especially the image of the rolling stone are amazing. It’s like seeing the inner workings of the great man’s brain. And of course I can hear the song, in Bob’s voice of course.
Nadine Reynolds “do you believe” 30.5cm x 30.5cm $350 Mixed media on silk, on canvas This handwriting is Carole King’s she sang backing vocals for Crosby Stills and Nash in 1976. Apparently, she needed a prompt to remember the lyrics and so quickly wrote this as a memory aid. Graham Nash’s profound message was often in the back of my mind while I was in the throes of bringing up my own children. As a new grandparent, I think I love the last few words of the song most. “Don't you ever ask them, "Why? If they told you, you will cry So just look at them and sigh And know they love you”
Nadine Reynolds “Know it’s Hard” 52cm x 52cm Mixed media on silk, on canvas $500 There is something so visceral about handwriting. It is so personal like hearing someone’s voice or seeing their gait from a distance. Bob Dylan is the poet of his time. It’s such a gift to see the editing. Normalising mistakes is quite metaphoric.
Nadine Reynolds “when we sang” 30.5cm x 30.5cm Mixed media on silk, on canvas $350 I admire Taylor Swift so much. She is a great role model for my daughter. I love that she is known for being kind and strong and a canny businesswoman. She’s clever and authentic, transparent and wise. I listened to this song on repeat as I made this work, remembering many times ‘when we sang.’
Nadine Reynolds “Remember to play” 30.5cm x 30.5cm Mixed media on silk, on canvas $350 https://www.the-paulmccartney-project.com/song/hey-jude/ “Hey Jude” handwritten lyrics by Paul McCartney, after he had resolved the song, in his beautiful handwriting, in what looks like a fountain pen. The gentle yellow aging on the original document is referenced in the acrylic on the silk. I have a personal connection to this song. It was the first time I played in a band on stage. Ipswich Civic Centre, 3rd clarinet, but I at least had the great nanananaaaa tune. I was only ten and was apparently hidden behind the music stand set on its lowest position. I remember my music teacher saying it was one of the greatest songs of all time.
