We arrived early so walked to the museum and visited the whales. The beautiful colours of Shannon Novak's work are now behind the whales. The sky was stormy and the riverside skyline juxtaposed the ever-present trees. The play was amazing. I loved the swirl of the snow.</image:caption>

It all seems quite dystopian, some of the images were too disturbing. I've covered them with clouds referencing Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now." Our Cocker spaniel, Tigger dozing in the heat with the agapanthus in full bloom in the garden below and listening to podcasts, who should fly down but a local king parrot. “Rex” was talkative and answered several questions in typical tweets, bobbing around as flew from easel to table. I found her school art book and was transported right back to this time of being her art teacher. Her colour choices, the cute way she drew people and the memory of making crowns and then teaching her class how to use mirrors to create self-portraits, comes straight back to mind. It has been such a treat to meld the roles of artist, teacher and mother in this exhibition. The timing is even more poignant. Gemima has just graduated Year 12.</image:caption>

Anastasia gleefully announced it during the workshop. I love the way the ducks are the embodiment of her joyful exuberance. The embroidered ducks typify the philosophy of “Made to Move”. In combining Orens’ paintings with examples from his extensive collection of cartoon characters, a little of the complexity of adolescence is captured. They are fascinating. Interestingly, echidnas like marine animals, can perform electroception, which begins in their snout, covered in electroreceptors. This is of course how they find ants. I like the way the silk background has taken on a fiery quality. I heard on the news last might that fire ants are becoming a significant problem in the area. Now that’s a thought – maybe echidnas can solve the problem for us.</image:caption>

I was absolutely sure that a dragon would appear in his work at The Lighthouse. But no! Dougie had perfected dragons and had now moved on to other exciting compositions influenced, if I remember correctly by a novel, he and another of the artists had been enjoying. We needed to move around a bit, and I was not good at changing school. Home-schooling was the chosen solution. Following a Montessori curriculum we studied Art – Giotto, Rubens, Kokoschka. Strange choices for Year 4, but who am I to say? The images of those artworks including “Portrait of Susanna Lunden” by Peter Paul Rubens c 1622 are seared in my brain. Rubens himself said “Every child has a spirit of creation.” As an art teacher of children from 4 to 18 years I completely agree.</image:caption>

Much later in life I discovered the works of women such as Georgia O’Keefe, Frida Kahlo and Mary Cassatt. Thankfully they are now household names. “Breakfast in Bed” by Mary Cassatt has informed this work. I love the exuberance of the young child oblivious to the exhaustion on her mother’s face. Child-like drawings float above the pair. They are embroidered. Always, in my work a way to honour grandmothers. By the time this work is shown I will also have this privileged title.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Nadine Reynolds “A line around your thoughts” 140cm x 48 cm Acrylic and silk thread on silk $750 Learning from "The Masters" is a pleasant challenge. So much of the thinking work in terms of colour and composition has been done, so I could concentrate on the demands of working on silk. I really enjoyed adding the gold. I was surprised that initially it didn't hold the amazing results I had hoped. I went back into my studio late in the afternoon to take some final photos and was astounded in the difference that just an hour had made to the light. It really was the golden hour.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Nadine Reynolds “Where is the Pearl Earring?” 140cm x 48 cm Acrylic and silk thread on silk $750 Interestingly, instead of posters of Scott Baio and ‘the Fonz’ my teenage bedroom was decorated with Vermeer prints including “The girl with Pearl Earring.” Years later and as an art teacher I’m really interested in aesthetic influences. I have enjoyed the challenge of learning from the masters. I have researched colour palettes and historic contexts, but it’s the eyes that have captured my soul. Who was this girl in the blue turban with the pearl earring? Did she also look up at her bedroom wall and dream of her future life? Did she live to a comfortable middle age surrounded by wonderful family and friends? We can only wonder. As an art teacher I’m really interested in aesthetic influences and have enjoyed the challenge of learning from works I loved as a child. The embroidered paintings are on silk to communicate ideas of change, flow and influence.</image:caption>

I loved seeing the actors rush between scenes and catching quick glimpses of them on the tv monitor in between serving and doing the dishes. The scribbles and especially the image of the rolling stone are amazing. It’s like seeing the inner workings of the great man’s brain. And of course I can hear the song, in Bob’s voice of course.</image:caption>

Apparently, she needed a prompt to remember the lyrics and so quickly wrote this as a memory aid. Graham Nash’s profound message was often in the back of my mind while I was in the throes of bringing up my own children. As a new grandparent, I think I love the last few words of the song most. “Don't you ever ask them, "Why? If they told you, you will cry So just look at them and sigh And know they love you”</image:caption>

The gentle yellow aging on the original document is referenced in the acrylic on the silk. I have a personal connection to this song. It was the first time I played in a band on stage. Ipswich Civic Centre, 3rd clarinet, but I at least had the great nanananaaaa tune. I was only ten and was apparently hidden behind the music stand set on its lowest position. I remember my music teacher saying it was one of the greatest songs of all time.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Nadine Reynolds “Oikonomias” 74cm x 98 cm Acrylic and silk thread on silk $750 I painted this silk for “The Bradley” the ABC Radio's Portrait Prize. In 2024 Gardening Australia's Costa Georgiadis was the subject. When researching I loved that Costa spoke about his grandparents and the affect they have had on his life. I was very interested the idea of ‘oikonomias.’ This philosophy of saving, appreciation living humbly really. I have embroidered this Greek word. I decided to paint a lemon tree in the background to reference his grandparents. There are many photographs of Costa on the internet with and even adorned with nasturtiums. They are a favourite flower of mine too. It has been a pleasure researching as much as I could about someone who is using his voice to make the world a better place.</image:caption>

Images drawn by Gemima in early childhood, capturing stages in her artistic development have been replicated and embroidered into the silk. As you walk past the silk, the work will move. This is to communicate ideas of flow, change, excitement, growth. My daughter is now a teenager, sewing her own clothes with a machine. In the future her skills and artistic development will continue to grow and change. Capturing her likeness and the images she made as a little girl honour this precious time.</image:caption>

Tiny 'ear rocks' keep us balanced within the inner ear, there's a little pouch called the utricle that contains about 1,000 little pebbles made of calcium carbonate. The tiny rocks serve an important purpose: They stimulate nerve cells when we move our heads — and send signals to our brain that guide our sense of up and down.” Allison Aubreyhttp://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=103463398</image:caption>
